Description

Dihydrocodeine 30mg Tablets are a prescription opioid analgesic used for the relief of moderate to severe pain, particularly when other non-opioid painkillers (like paracetamol or ibuprofen) are not providing adequate relief. Dihydrocodeine is a semi-synthetic opioid, chemically related to codeine, that acts directly on the central nervous system to alter pain perception and increase pain tolerance.

Each tablet contains 30mg of dihydrocodeine tartrate, and it is typically used in short- to medium-term pain management under medical supervision.

🔹 How It Works:

Dihydrocodeine binds to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. These receptors are involved in transmitting pain signals. By stimulating these receptors, the medication blocks the sensation of pain and produces a mild sedative effect, often accompanied by a sense of calm or well-being.

🔹 Common Uses Include:

  • Post-operative pain

  • Muscular or joint pain

  • Nerve-related pain (neuralgia, sciatica)

  • Chronic back pain

  • Injury-related pain

  • Dental pain

Dihydrocodeine may also occasionally be prescribed to treat persistent dry coughs or shortness of breath in terminal illness, but its primary use is in pain control.

🔹 Dosage and Administration:

  • The usual adult dose is 30mg every 4–6 hours, as required.

  • Do not exceed the prescribed amount.

  • The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food.

  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration to reduce the risk of dependence.

🔹 Side Effects:

As with all opioids, dihydrocodeine may cause:

  • Drowsiness or sedation

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Dizziness or light-headedness

  • Dry mouth

  • Itching or sweating

Serious but less common side effects include respiratory depression, low blood pressure, or allergic reactions. Always contact a healthcare provider if you experience difficulty breathing or swelling of the face/throat.

🔹 Warnings and Precautions:

  • Prolonged use can lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms.

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless advised by a doctor.

  • Should not be taken with alcohol, other opioids, sedatives, or sleep medications.

  • Caution is advised when driving or operating heavy machinery due to possible drowsiness.

  • Not suitable for children under 12 years old.

🔹 Storage and Handling:

  • Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Do not use past the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Note: Dihydrocodeine is classified as a controlled substance in many regions due to its potential for misuse. It should only be taken under medical supervision, and any unused tablets should be returned to a pharmacy for safe disposal.
